Mr. Colbert starts his statement with Ethos by bringing to attention he is gladly using his fame to bring attention to the issue of immigrant farm workers. Though I may think that his use of humor in some parts was a little bit too much and might have hurt his argument slightly, I believe that the panel of officials he was speaking to knew of his intent and are familiar with his tactics with humor and also has great knowledge of the issues he was speaking of.
Then throughout his statement he uses many examples of Logos, and Pathos when he shares his story about working along side of immigrant workers on the farm. Speaking from his experience and trying to connect to the committee with his words. He paints a great picture of the need to let immigrants in but also encourage more American citizens to work on the farms and not just give these jobs to immigrants. Undoubtedly he uses his weapon of humor to strengthen certain points of his argument which can strike a nerve into the congressman he is speaking to but it can cause them to think real hard about what points he decides to emphasize.
I liked Stephen Colbert's statement because I really think he knows how to connect to the audience. I think it is effective the way he spoke because these congressmen he talked to do not normally get opening statements like his. His words may hit harder and and have more of an effect on them and cause all the congressmen to think more thoroughly on the bill. Also I think the humor relieves some of the tension it has in the court room among all the people in the court room.
From having read this book many years ago and knowing some history about Atticus, he did all he could while speaking to the jury. There was pretty much absolutely 0% he was going to win the trial but with his status among the people as a great man and great lawyer he cause the jury to really think about what they were doing with that mans life.
