"Guyland" by Michael Kimmel was an interesting piece of writing to read. The main point the author wanted to share was how the guy code that men/boys live by directly effects our society. What made this essay so interesting to me is that because I am a male I experienced many of the stereotypes that the guy code endorses. Its funny to read about how us guys grow up are influenced so much by the male model figures we look up to. In the reading it made me laugh that guys do everything to seek approval by other men and my thought about women was the exact same thing, I think women do everything to seek approval by other men, its just different to think that guys do the same thing. But also growing up and learning how to be tough and not a sissy has really been embedded in my head. Many of the boys or men in the reading often stated that whenever they showed any weakness they had to act tougher than they were, and I feel so strongly about acting tougher than we are because I dont want to think of it as a negative rule because I think it is a form of survival. For example in life when we need to get jobs and this applies to male and female, in order for us to advance anywhere in life we have to do something we are not comfortable so that means in a sense we have to act tougher to achieve our goal when we step out of our comfort zone.
Something that stuck out to me when the author shared a fact about boys being more likely to develop depression suicidal behavior, and other forms of out of control behaviors than girls. Looking through the guy code and linking that fact with it makes so much sense and I dont know why I never realized it before.
I feel that the author wanted to put a negative twist on guy code and influence change for the better but in my opinion I dont think its guy code we have to worry about, its SOCIETY. Just like in the reading a girl said that they know that the weaker ones get targeted so they take a step back and go along with it so the "cool" ones will like them. Its all a vicious circle that forms from the media to women to men and back around again.
